Podcasting Deserves a Player That Respects You

LibrePods was born from a straightforward frustration: every major podcast application seemed engineered to serve advertisers and data brokers rather than actual listeners. Built by a passionate community of over 200 contributors spanning six continents, LibrePods strips away everything that fails to serve your listening experience and keeps only what matters.

"We believe your podcast habits are your own business — not someone else's data pipeline."

Released under the GPLv3 license, LibrePods offers complete transparency. Every line of code is publicly auditable, every network request is visible through the built-in monitor, and every feature exists because real users requested it. From variable-speed playback and intelligent silence trimming to OPML import and RSS auto-discovery, LibrePods handles the complexity so you can focus entirely on the content that matters to you.

Six Reasons to Switch Today

100% Open Source

Every single line of LibrePods code is publicly available on GitHub for anyone to audit, fork, or contribute to. There are no hidden telemetry modules, no obfuscated analytics scripts, and no "phone home" mechanisms buried in the build. What you see in the repository is precisely what executes on your device, giving you unmatched confidence in the software you trust with your daily listening habits.

Cross-Platform

LibrePods runs natively on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android with one consistent experience across every platform. Your subscriptions, playback preferences, and podcast organization can be transferred using open standards such as OPML, eliminating dependence on proprietary ecosystems or vendor lock-in. Whether you use a desktop at work, a laptop at home, or an Android device on the move, LibrePods provides the same intuitive interface and reliable performance so you can pick up exactly where you left off.

Zero Advertisements

No banner ads, no sponsored episodes injected into your feed, and no "recommended" content from paid partners. LibrePods displays only the podcasts you explicitly choose to subscribe to — nothing more, nothing less. Your listening experience remains clean, distraction-free, and focused entirely on the content you care about. Without advertising networks, trackers, or promotional placements competing for your attention, every screen serves a single purpose: helping you discover, organize, and enjoy your podcasts.

Full Offline Mode

Download entire series for offline listening with intelligent storage management. LibrePods automatically fetches new episodes based on rules you define, manages disk space by removing played episodes, and supports SD card storage on Android devices. Whether you are on a long flight, underground commute, or traveling through areas with poor connectivity, your entire library stays accessible without a single byte of data usage.

Smart Queue

An intelligent auto-queue system that learns from your listening patterns, combined with drag-and-drop manual control, priority slots for important episodes, and filter rules that actually work the way you expect them to. Create custom workflows that automatically place new releases at the top of your queue, prioritize favorite shows, or group content by category. Whether you prefer complete automation or hands-on control, LibrePods adapts to the way you listen instead of forcing you into a rigid workflow.

Privacy by Design

No account creation required. No cloud sync servers storing your data. All information remains on your local device, with optional end-to-end encrypted backup to cloud storage providers you personally control and trust. Because LibrePods operates without tracking infrastructure, your listening history, subscriptions, and preferences remain private by default. You decide where your data is stored, how it is backed up, and who has access to it, ensuring complete ownership of your podcast experience.

Up and Running in Sixty Seconds

03

Listen Your Way

Customize playback speed from 0.5x to 4x, enable automatic silence trimming, set chapter navigation markers, adjust volume boost for quietly recorded episodes, and create smart playlists that automatically update whenever new episodes arrive from your subscribed shows.

Your Data Never Leaves Your Device

LibrePods was designed from its very first commit with a zero-trust architecture for all network communications. Unlike commercial podcast applications that embed analytics SDKs, advertising frameworks, and crash reporting services by default, LibrePods contains absolutely no third-party tracking code of any kind.

No Analytics SDKs

Zero third-party analytics embedded. No Google Analytics, no Mixpanel, no Firebase. We do not even operate our own analytics server because we have no interest in tracking how you use LibrePods.

Encrypted Local Storage

All subscription data, playback positions, and preferences are stored in an encrypted local SQLite database on your device. No plaintext credentials exist anywhere in the application.

Network Transparency

A built-in network monitor displays every outgoing connection in real time. You can verify at any moment that LibrePods only contacts the RSS feeds you have explicitly subscribed to.

Reproducible Builds

Every release can be independently verified against the source code. Build instructions and cryptographic hashes are published alongside each release for complete binary transparency.

Loved by Podcast Enthusiasts

I switched from Spotify purely for the silence trimming feature and ended up staying for the privacy. It is remarkable how much data other apps collect just for playing audio files. LibrePods proves you do not need any of it.

As a daily commuter, the auto-download and offline features are perfect for my routine. I download overnight and have fresh episodes ready for my 45-minute train ride every single morning without any buffering or data usage.

The OPML import from Apple Podcasts worked flawlessly. I had 87 subscriptions moved over in about ten seconds. The variable speed going up to 4x is a game-changer for lecture podcasts where I need to cover a lot of material quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, entirely free. LibrePods is licensed under GPLv3 and has no premium tiers, no in-app purchases, and no pro features locked behind a paywall. Every feature available in the application is free for every user, forever. The project is sustained through voluntary community donations and organizational sponsorships rather than revenue targets.

Absolutely. LibrePods supports standard OPML import and export, which is compatible with virtually every podcast application including Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, Overcast, Castro, and many others. Navigate to Settings, select Import, choose your OPML file, and all of your subscriptions will be added within seconds with no manual re-subscription required.

Yes, fully. You can download individual episodes or configure automatic download rules per podcast, such as keeping the latest five unplayed episodes. Downloaded content is stored locally and accessible without any internet connection whatsoever. On Android devices, you can also choose to store downloads on an external SD card to conserve internal storage.

Not yet, though it remains one of our most requested features and is actively in development. The iOS version is being built with the same privacy-first philosophy and feature parity with the Android release. You can track real-time progress on our GitHub issue tracker. We currently estimate a public beta release in late 2025.

LibrePods is a community-driven project funded through Open Collective donations, GitHub Sponsors, and occasional grants from digital rights organizations. We have no venture capital backing, no investors, and no revenue targets to meet. This means our only incentive is building the best possible podcast player for real users rather than maximizing engagement metrics for advertisers.

By design, LibrePods does not operate a cloud sync server to protect your privacy. However, you can manually synchronize by exporting an OPML file from one device and importing it on another. Some advanced users set up automated OPML synchronization using their own cloud storage services like Nextcloud or Dropbox with simple scripts. A community-maintained guide for this process is available in our documentation wiki.

LibrePods supports standard RSS 2.0 podcast feeds with MP3, AAC, M4A, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, and WAV audio formats. It also handles RSS podcast extensions including chapter markers through Podlove and Podcast 2.0 standards, transcript files in SRT and VTT formats, and high-resolution artwork. Video podcasts in MP4 format are additionally supported on desktop platforms through a built-in video player.
